The Fault in Our Stars is another great work from John Green.  If you are not familiar with this author you are missing out.  (Check out Looking for Alaska or Will Grayson, Will Grayson.)   The novel follows the narration of sixteen-year-old Hazel.  Hazel is living with terminal thyroid cancer that has resided in her lungs.  A new drug has bought her a few years, but the road isn’t easy.  She carts her oxygen tank everywhere and she must sleep with a breathing machine.  All of these are preventative measures for her regular visits to the hospital to have her lungs drained.

With a bleak outlook on life, it is not a surprise Hazel hates attending her Cancer Kid Support Group.  Her view changes when the attractive August Waters attends a group session.   Immediately the two strike a friendship that develops into a romantic relationship.

It is through this relationship that readers painfully witness the life and struggles of what it is like to be a teen with cancer.  I won’t lie to you, this book is sad.  Also, it is honest and, at times, humorous.  This Kentucky Bluegrass Nominee will be a favorite among any reader.
